Whytbank Tower (Borders) - Past & Present
.jpg)
Whytbank Tower (Selkirkshire)
Whytbank is situated near Galashiels. It is a typical simple border tower built of whinstone rubble.
Until 1992 the tower was buried in its own ruins the only substantial fragment being a tooth of masonry supporting a caphouse.
The restoration (or rebuild) uncovered the vaulted ground floor and entrance with its yett in situ.
Whytbank is illustrated as it shows what can be done if there is the will.
When I visited Whytbank in its ruinous state I never ever considered restoration as an option - but there it is.
