Baltersan Castle is a fairly well preserved ruin of a late 16th century Tower House. It stands in a field close to Crossraguel Abbey. It was built for John Kennedy, stepson of the 3rd earl of Cassilis in 1584 and passed to another branch of the Kennedy's about 100 years later. It was a tall L-plan tower, 3 storeys high with an attic and bartizans. Many important architectural features remain, including a square stair turret in the re-entrant angle, a probable ingleneuk seat, a window with spaces for sliding shutters in the walls, and some fine moulded stones. More details are to be found in the Journal, Issue 14. pp 22 - 28, and at yourscottishcastle.com
