Earlstoun Castle (Kirkcudbright)

Earlstoun Castle is a typical laird's house of the late 16th or early 17th C. It is L-planned of 3 storeys and a garret with an attached courtyard. The building was originally harled but, surprisingly, the gables are not crow stepped.

Long in a state of serious disrepair its future was unsure until it was acquired by the Vivat Trust whose other properties in Scotland include Barns and Hallbar Towers.

Vivat have completed emergency work to stabilise the exterior but the same cannot be said for the interior. A total of £600,000 is required to finish the work and to allow it to earn its keep as up-market holiday accommodation.
